Primary Chicken Cell Products: CEF, CEKC, CELC & CED

AVS Bio prepares primary chicken embryo cell products daily from our own highly controlled SPF chicken embryos. Primary cells are prepared fresh and shipped to order for highest cell viability. Cells are tested for viability and bioburden.

Cell Types & Applications

• Chicken Embryo Fibroblasts (CEF) — the most widely used primary avian cell substrate for virus propagation, including vaccine production for Marek's disease (MD), and other avian pathogens. Also used in general virology research and QC testing for pathogens such as Avian Leukosis (ALV).
• Chicken Embryo Kidney Cells (CEKC) — A key avian substrate for propagation of poultry viruses, including Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT) and Avian Rotavirus.
• Chicken Embryo Liver Cells (CELC) — used in applications requiring a liver-derived primary cell substrate, such as avian adenovirus propagation.
• Chicken Embryo Dermal Cells (CED) — specialized primary cells for applications requiring a dermal substrate. Available in 125 ml vials (1 billion+ cells); two-week advance notice required.

Quality Groups

All cells are available in two quality groups:

• CAV-Negative — certified free of Chicken Anemia Virus.
• CAV-Negative, GS Antigen-Free — CAV-negative plus free of group-specific (GS) avian leukosis virus antigen. C/O designation; not resistant to any ALV subgroup. Required for applications where endogenous retrovirus interference must be excluded.

Media, Preparation & Documentation

Tissue culture media contain animal-origin ingredients sourced exclusively from countries with documented negligible BSE risk. Cells are prepared under strict aseptic conditions in restricted-access areas, with batch records documenting all preparation steps. Batch records are available upon request ($235 documentation fee).
