Alpha-1-antitrypsin is a serine protease inhibitor encoded by the SERPINA1 gene that belongs to the serpin family. Its biological function is to irreversibly inhibit trypsin, chymotrypsin, and plasminogen activator. It is also known to inhibit elastase, plasmin, and thrombin. Other names for Alpha-1-antitrypsin are SERPINA1, AAT, A1A, ⍺1AT, A1AT, and serpin family A member.
